"Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up."

Am I Ready to Start a Business? 10 personal questions to ask yourself before you commit

No, we won’t begin with “Do you have a master’s degree?” Although education does matter, higher education is not a requirement for starting or succeeding in a new business. In fact, according to a 1992 United States Census Bureau report, only 5.3 percent of business owners have a Master’s degree or higher education. 9.4 percent had less than a high school education; some only up to the eighth grade. Oddly enough, only 17 percent had any business education. The founder of Dell Computers was a college dropout. Starting out of his garage, he managed to excel above all of the world’s top computer manufacturers. One in three computers sold today is a Dell.

What you will need, is more commonly known as “street smarts” and common sense. In addition, you will need to have certain individual qualities, or personality traits. Most individuals who are successful in business and in “life” possess these traits. Take the quiz and see how many of the following questions you can answer with a confident “yes.”

Do I have energy, and am I in good health?
Am I a self-starter?
Do I have a willingness to work hard?
Am I a good organizer?
Am I able to make decisions?
Am I able to make plans and follow through?
Am I able to inspire and direct others?
Am I honest (and be honest!)?
Do I regularly balance my checkbook and avoid debt?
Am I a jack of all trades and a master at one???

If you can honestly answer all the above questions with a “yes,” you may be the type of individual who is well qualified to operate a successful business. But before you close the deal, be sure you have educated yourself in the field you’ve chosen. Research and learn the process necessary to start and operate your own successful business. Read good books relating to your type of business and get the education you need to be successful.

If you’re unsure of your response to any of the ten questions listed above, it’s possible that if you attempt starting a business, you may fall into the ninety percent of new businesses which fail in their first year. The statistics can be startling, but they are a reality. You may want to re-consider your business idea.

Are You Ready to Be your Own Boss?

Well are you?

If you want your new business to succeed, you must know why most new businesses fail to be successful. Most people spend more time planning their vacations than they do their new business. Most small business books won’t tell you the poor odds for success. They want to get you all pumped up on your “rags to riches” dream. My intention is not to scare you away from your dream, but to alert you to the odds of failure that are a reality that most people starting out choose to ignore. This book will help you beat those odds.

It doesn’t require the investment of tens of thousands of dollars to start a business, nor does it require a Master’s degree. It’s about common sense and making the right choices.

Are You Ready to Be Your Own Boss?” will guide you in an easy-to-read and comprehend manner how to:

*Decide if you’re ready to “be your own boss.”
*Plan your new business for success.
*Avoid the common mistakes in new business.
*Creatively finance your new venture.
*Succeed!

W
hat I won’t do is try to dazzle you with $10 words. What I will do is try to show you some of the misconceptions we all have, and mistakes we all make that can cause delays to our business’s success. I believe that if you are aware of these misconceptions and mistakes, you will do better at avoiding them and in turn will more likely be able to move your business forward to a successful level.

The author received this letter just last week!

Hi Carol: I finished your book two weeks ago and am very favorably impressed. We at the University level rely on Academic stuff that has a tendency to overkill with “immaterial fluff” and a non-practical approach. Your book is very informative and presents a clear, down-to-earth, practical approach to starting a business. I was impressed enough that I recommended your book to our professor that teaches our Small Business classes. I’ll contact you when he finishes evaluating your book for class usage.

Book Reviews

Carol is a very talented writer and a successful business owner herself. She can explain complicated business issues in plain and simple English.

Some people said to start your own business is like flying a airplane, you need to go through the difficult take-off period and gain a certain altitude before you before you can cruise and enjoy the flight. "Are You Ready to Be Your Own Boss?" covers critical factors that you need to know or should know before starting your business.

"Are You Ready to Be Your Own Boss?" has 144 pages. It is a non-fiction but it is extremely well written and packed with useful information. I found it very hard to put down once I started reading (That rarely happens to me when I read a non-fiction). It is a touchstone for your dream of becoming a business owner. It is a must-have if you intend to start your own business!

                                             -Gang Chen, Outskirts Press

Carol Denbow has written the "must-read" book for anyone thinking of going into business for themselves. Packed with real-life stories and backed up with the latest statistics, Carol tells it like it is in an honest, straight forward manner: the good, the bad, and the ugly. This truly is "the" book to read BEFORE you decide to become your own boss.

-Jim Allen, The "Big Idea Coach"

WOW!!! On a scale of 1-10 this book is a 10. If you want to be your own boss, then this book should be a must for you. Carol has used a simple way of explaining how to successfully run your business.
